| Note | Né à Jupille en Austrasie, Pépin le Bref est le petit-fils de Pépin de Herstal et un des fils de Charles Martel, tous deux maires du palais d'Austrasie sous les rois mérovingiens. A la mort de son père, en 741, il partage le pouvoir avec son frère Carloman et deviens maire du palais de Neustrie et de Bourgogne. En 743, pour mettre fin à une révolte qui avait éclaté, les deux frères rétablissent un roi mérovingiens, Childéric III, mettant fin à un interrrègne, qui durait depuis 737. Mais en 751, avec l'approbation du pape, il fait enfermer ce roi (le dernier des mérovingien) dans une abbaye et se fait élire roi à sa place par les Grands du royaume et sacrer par les évêques. C'est la cérémonie du sacre, renouvelée à Saint-Denis par le pape Etienne II en 754, qui confère à la dynastie des Carolingiens, une "légitimité" et un "pouvoir divin". Elle consacrel'alliance entre la papauté et la royauté franque. Pépin le Bref meurt en 768, son royaume est partagé entre ses deux fils, Charlemagne et Carloman. CdBdM |
